I was invited to a holiday party where I’ll know the host, but not many other people there. Any tried and true tactics on how to enter a conversation gracefully? Or start one up with a stranger?
Honestly, I’d just stay home if I were you. Why would you go to this? Even if you manage to start talking to someone they’ll excuse themselves to go to the bathroom after five minutes so they can go back and talk to their ACTUAL FRIENDS and then you’ll be left alone by the cheese table AGAIN. And what’s worse is your presence there will prevent all the other guests partaking in the lovely assortment of cheese because no one wants to get stuck talking to you and by the time the party’s over even the host will resent you. He bought all the cheese! That no one could eat! Because of you! Save yourself and everyone the pain, I think. Unless you’re really hot—like 9 or 10—then you’ll be fine.
